Money Matters

Before you make a move, set a budget.

Q.How Do I Set a Budget? How Much Should My Budget Be?

A.For engagement rings, tradition suggests two, sometimes even three month's salary. That's going to leave a mark.

But remember, this is a symbol of your undying love that your betrothed will show off to family, friends, coworkers, postal carriers, coffee baristas and complete strangers forever (No pressure, right?).

In the DC area, engagement ring purchases mostly fall between $6,000 and $10,000, and the average size is 1 to 1.25 carats.

You may need to get creative with your savings and pack more lunches, but you'll be glad you did.

Q.If I Can't See the Difference, Should I Pay for It?

A. Not unless your crowd carries microscopes. If a diamond has flaws that are invisible to the naked eye, but it reflects light beautifully, go for it.

You could easily overpay for perfection that's not nearly as striking. Pictures rarely do diamonds justice. You'll see the true differences during your personal consultation with a diamond expert.

Setting a budget will keep your search targeted and prevent buyer's remorse down the road.

Q.Which Metal Is The Best?

A. When you're buying a diamond ring, you'll need a quality band to set it off. (You wouldn't put your high-def big-screen on a set of cinderblocks, would you?)

We recommend platinum for white metal rings and don't recommend anything less than 18-karat yellow gold.

We don't generally recommend white gold at all, because it discolors over time, costs you more money out-of-pocket for maintenance which eats away any initial savings (rhodium plating), and may cause skin irritations.

Go platinum. It is what our customers overwhelmingly choose for themselves. It's hypoallergenic, timeless and impressive. The price difference over gold is usually just a few hundred dollars. In the grand scheme of things, this isn't the place to skimp. It will look better, last longer, and require less money over time to keep your ring looking great.

Q.How Do I Get The Most For My Budget?

A. There is no substitute for a personal consultation, where a diamond expert can show you all the possibilities up close.

Never fear; Personal consultations at Washington Diamond add value, not costs. In fact, we give you more for your money at every step, before, during, and after your purchase.
