Understanding your estimate

What the calculator can’t see

The calculator works from a handful of grades. A gemologist looks at everything else, which is why two diamonds that look identical on paper can differ by thousands.

  1. Cut quality

How well a diamond is cut decides how much light it returns. Two stones with identical grades can look, and cost, very different.

  2. Fluorescence

Some diamonds glow blue under UV light. Strong fluorescence can lower the price of a colorless stone; faint fluorescence rarely matters.

  3. Proportions and symmetry

Table size, depth and symmetry shape how a diamond sparkles, even within the same cut grade.

  4. Where the inclusions sit

An inclusion under the center of the stone is easier to see than one near the edge, even at the same clarity grade.

  5. The grading lab

Grades from different labs aren’t always equivalent. GIA and AGS reports are the most consistent, which is why we rely on them.

  6. Condition

Chips, abrasions and wear from years of daily life affect value, and they don’t appear on a grading report.

This calculator prices natural diamonds. Shopping lab-grown? Read our guide to lab-grown diamonds to see how their pricing compares.

Guides

Make sense of your number

For sellers

Selling a diamond

For many clients, selling follows an inheritance, a divorce or another change in life.

Understanding your number
Your estimate reflects market data for natural diamonds. An offer also reflects the diamond’s report, cut and condition, so we see every stone first.
What affects offers
A GIA or AGS grading report, carat weight (we buy from 0.50 carat), color and clarity, cut quality, fluorescence, and any chips or wear.
Your options
Sell outright, consign with no fee or commission, trade in or upgrade, or redesign it into something you’ll wear.
Why clients trust Washington Diamond
A family-owned business since 1969. Licensed and bonded, with free, fully insured shipping and payment by FedEx check or bank wire.

For buyers

Buying a diamond

A fair price is easier to recognize when you know what’s behind it.

How to read your estimate
Treat it as a market reference for a loose natural diamond. Retail prices also reflect the setting, certification and service, so a finished ring will sit above it.
What drives price beyond carat weight
Cut quality does more for a diamond’s beauty than any other grade. Color, clarity, proportions and fluorescence all move the price, and small differences add up.
Why GIA certification matters
GIA grading is the most consistent independent standard, so you know you’re comparing like with like.
Natural vs. lab-grown
Lab-grown diamonds cost far less and have little resale value; natural diamonds hold their value better. We offer both and will explain the tradeoffs honestly.

Questions

Diamond pricing, answered

Straight answers to the questions we hear most, from first estimate to final decision.

Ask Us Your Question

The calculator

What does the calculator’s value mean?

It’s an estimate of what a natural diamond with the details you entered is worth, based on current market data. Think of it as a reference point. The value of a specific diamond also depends on things a calculator can’t see, such as cut precision, fluorescence and how the stone looks in person.

Why doesn’t my result match a jeweler’s price or offer?

The estimate reflects market data for a loose natural diamond. A retail price also covers the setting, certification and service, and an offer reflects the specific stone once it’s examined. Both can reasonably differ from the estimate.

Why can two diamonds with the same specs have different prices?

A grading report covers the essentials. Cut precision, proportions, fluorescence, where inclusions sit and which lab graded the stone can each move the price, sometimes by thousands of dollars. Seeing stones side by side is the surest way to understand the difference.

What information do I need to use the calculator?

Your diamond’s shape, carat weight, color and clarity. For a closer estimate, open “Show more options” and add the grading lab and the diamond’s proportions grade. You’ll find all of these on the grading report or an appraisal.

Does the calculator work for lab-grown diamonds?

No. It’s built for natural diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds are priced very differently and have little resale value, so a natural-diamond estimate won’t apply. Our lab-grown diamond guide explains what a fair price looks like.

Selling

Is this what Washington Diamond would pay for my diamond?

No. The estimate isn’t our purchase or sale price. Any offer depends on the diamond itself and its grading report, so we look at each stone before making one.

What kinds of diamonds do you buy?

Natural, untreated diamonds of 0.50 carat and larger with a GIA or AGS report: color D to J, clarity Flawless to SI2, Ideal, Excellent or Very Good proportions, and no more than faint fluorescence. Not sure about yours? See our full buying criteria or ask us.

Should I sell outright or consign?

Selling outright is fastest. Consignment draws on our network of qualified private buyers and investors to get the best possible price, with no fee or commission, and your diamond stays fully insured while in our care. We’ll help you weigh the two.

How and when do I get paid?

Once we’ve reviewed your diamond and its paperwork and you’ve accepted our offer, we pay promptly by FedEx check or bank wire.

I’ve inherited a diamond. Where do I start?

Start with a private valuation. We’ll examine the piece, explain what it’s worth and walk you through your options: keep it, redesign it, sell it or consign it. There’s no pressure to decide that day.

What if I’ve lost the grading report?

Bring what you have. We’ll review any certificates, appraisals or receipts and guide you through the rest.

Buying and upgrading

Can I sell or trade in my diamond with Washington Diamond?

Yes. We buy qualifying natural diamonds, offer consignment, and can apply your diamond’s value toward an upgrade. Depending on your stone, you may receive the full value of your previous purchase, or possibly more, toward a new diamond.

Why does GIA certification matter?

GIA grades diamonds independently and consistently, so you can compare stones fairly and trust that the grades on the report match the diamond in front of you.

Should I choose natural or lab-grown?

It depends on what matters most to you. Lab-grown costs far less up front but has little resale value; natural diamonds hold their value better. We offer both and will explain the tradeoffs honestly.

Appraisals and visits

How do I get an exact value or an appraisal?

Book a private appointment. A gemologist will examine your diamond and can prepare a formal appraisal for insurance, estate planning or your own records. Learn more about our appraisal services.

Do you offer virtual consultations if I’m not near DC?

Yes. Consultations are by phone or video, with the same one-on-one time you’d get in our Falls Church studio. When you sell or consign a diamond with us, we arrange free, fully insured shipping.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes. We see clients by private appointment, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 AM to 5 PM, at 1245 W Broad Street in Falls Church. That way a gemologist’s full attention is on you.
